DIRECTORATE OF UNDERGRADUATE (DUS)

The Directorate of Undergraduate Studies (DUS) at SJUIT is a central academic and administrative unit responsible for the effective coordination, oversight, and quality assurance of all undergraduate academic programmes across the University’s constituent colleges and campuses. The Directorate ensures that the undergraduate education offered at SJUIT meets the highest academic standards, aligns with national priorities, and equips students with the knowledge, skills, and values needed for personal and professional success.

The core mandate of the Directorate of Undergraduate Studies is to:
1) Provide academic leadership in the development, implementation, and management of undergraduate academic programmes.
2) Ensure the integrity, quality, and relevance of undergraduate education at SJUIT.
3) Coordinate academic processes such as admissions, curriculum implementation, assessments, and graduation requirements.
4) Serve as the principal liaison on undergraduate academic matters between faculties, departments, and University management.

The Directorate carries out a range of critical academic and administrative responsibilities, including:

Curriculum Oversight
1) Coordinate the design, review, and approval of undergraduate curricula in collaboration with departments and faculties.
2) Ensure all programmes comply with the standards set by the Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU) and professional regulatory bodies.

Academic Programme Management
1) Monitor the implementation and delivery of undergraduate programmes to ensure consistency, efficiency, and quality.
2) Facilitate the development of new undergraduate programmes in response to emerging societal and labor market needs.

Student Admission and Registration Support
1) Work in collaboration with the Admissions Office to manage undergraduate enrolment.
2) Oversee registration processes and ensure that all academic requirements and procedures are followed.

Academic Progress and Performance Monitoring
1) Track and evaluate student academic performance and progression across all programmes.
2) Coordinate the implementation of academic policies relating to probation, discontinuation, re-admission, and academic appeals.

Examinations and Assessments
1) Supervise the preparation, moderation, administration, and marking of undergraduate examinations.
2) Ensure fairness, transparency, and security in the conduct of assessments.
3) Coordinate the processing and publication of examination results.

Academic Calendar and Teaching Coordination
1) Manage the undergraduate academic calendar, including scheduling of teaching, examinations, and academic breaks.
2) Coordinate the allocation of courses and teaching resources in collaboration with academic departments.

Quality Assurance and Enhancement
1) Collaborate with the University Quality Assurance Directorate to ensure continuous improvement in the delivery and outcomes of undergraduate programmes.
2) Monitor teaching effectiveness and learning outcomes through periodic reviews and evaluations.

Graduation and Certification
1) Coordinate final year clearances, audits of academic records, and certification of eligible graduates.
2) Support the organization of graduation ceremonies in collaboration with relevant University units.

Academic Advising and Student Support
1) Promote academic mentorship and advising services to enhance student retention and success.
2) Support student orientation and induction into university academic life.

The Directorate of Undergraduate Studies plays a vital role in advancing SJUIT’s mission of offering Quality Employable Education. It serves as a pillar in shaping well-rounded graduates who are not only academically competent but also ethical, innovative, and responsive to the challenges of a dynamic world.
